Home and property: record the routines someone else may not know

Leave useful home and property instructions, from service contacts to maintenance records, without exposing access codes or security details.

Every home has details that become second nature to the person who handles them. Someone else may not know who repairs the heating, where the maintenance folder is, or which neighbor can explain a recurring problem.

Walk through the home slowly and notice the questions a helper might ask. Focus on practical orientation rather than creating a complicated manual.

Start with the people and the paperwork

List relevant service contacts, the landlord or property manager if applicable, and the location of maintenance records. Explain what each person handles. “Our regular plumber knows the history of the kitchen leak” is more useful than an unexplained phone number.

For a rented home, identify where the rental paperwork is kept and whom to contact with questions. Avoid interpreting legal obligations in the guide.

Describe ordinary routines

Consider waste collection, deliveries, plants, seasonal maintenance, or a service appointment already arranged. An instruction could say: “The outdoor plants are usually watered on the schedule posted inside the garden cupboard. Ask the neighbor listed in People to contact if you need help identifying them.”

Only describe tasks that another person can reasonably and safely understand. Do not turn your guide into instructions for hazardous repairs. Point the reader toward an appropriate professional instead.

Keep access information private

Do not include alarm codes, passwords, private security details, or other credentials. If someone may need access, arrange a suitable process separately and describe who can explain it.

Separate the practical description of the home from decisions about ownership, sale, or inheritance. Those matters belong with the appropriate legal documents and authorized people.

A home category works best when it answers the everyday questions: Who understands this place? Where are the records? What routine might otherwise be missed? A few thoughtful answers can make an unfamiliar household easier to navigate.
