Getting started

Writing a personal message that sounds like you

Write a warm personal message for your loved ones with simple words, reassuring thoughts, and no pressure to make it perfect.

Your personal message does not need to sound formal or profound. It can sound like the way you speak to someone you love.

If the blank space feels difficult, begin with an ordinary sentence: “I wanted to leave you a few words along with the practical information.” You can change it later. Starting is often easier than trying to find a perfect opening.

Choose a small purpose

You might want to express gratitude, offer reassurance, or explain why you made the guide. One purpose is enough. You do not need to summarize an entire life or anticipate every emotion your reader may feel.

A fictional example is: “Thank you for being someone I can trust. Take your time with the information here, and ask for help when you need it.” Use your own language rather than copying an example that does not feel natural.

Keep practical instructions in the categories

The message can explain that the guide is there to help. Specific tasks, contacts, and document locations are easier to find in their own instructions. This lets the reader spend a moment with your words before turning to the practical details.

Avoid putting private credentials or confidential identifiers into the message. It is part of the guide and should follow the same precautions as the rest of it.

Remember when the message can be read

Sharing a guide is not the same as sealing a letter until a future event. A Trusted Person who accepts access can read your message while the guide is available to them. Write with that immediate access in mind.

Preview the message after saving it. Read it aloud if that helps. Remove a sentence that sounds like someone else's voice, and keep the words that feel like yours.

You can revise the message as your relationships and thoughts change. A short, honest note may be more comforting than a polished speech. The important thing is that it expresses something you want the person to hear.

A simple way to be there for the people you love.

Put these ideas into your own guide, at your own pace.
